Common Places Where Dog Bites Can happen

The Chicago, Illinois personal injury lawyers at Briskman Briskman & Greenberg recently created a helpful infographic discussing some of the most common places where dog bites can occur and what people can do to avoid an animal attack. This guide can help pedestrians, parents, and anyone who frequently finds themselves around dogs stay safe while still enjoying the areas where dogs are often found.

Dog bites can happen anywhere, with the most common locations also being some of the most familiar. However, it is important to always remain vigilant around dogs—even those you are familiar with—because dog bites can have result in devastating injuries.

Many people are surprised by to learn that the most common places where dog bites happen are at the victim’s home, or the homes of friends or relatives. In fact, 77 percent of all dog bites take place in the home of a friend or family member.  While dogs can attack anyone, for any reason—or no apparent reason at all—the majority of dog bite victims are children. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over half of all dog attack victims are children. The most commonly attacked age group are children between the ages of five and six.

Aside from familiar places, there are also certain public locations that present a higher risk of encountering a dangerous dog.  For example, parks are a common location for dog bites. This is especially the case in parks that allow dogs to roam off-leash are the most dangerous. When visiting these parks, it is imperative to be careful when around dogs, even those you know and trust; dogs often react unpredictably when around unfamiliar places, people, or other dogs.

Businesses are another common location for dog bites, including veterinarian offices, retail stores, offices and restaurants with outdoor seating. Sidewalks are another potential high-risk area, because many dog owners walk their animals without a leash and, even leashed dogs are in close proximity to passers-by, giving them the opportunity to quickly attack.

When it comes to staying safe around both familiar and unfamiliar dogs, it is important to keep in mind a few basic dog safety tips.

1. Avoid approaching unfamiliar dogs,

2. Never attempt to pet a dog before first allowing the dog to sniff your hand,

3. Do not disturb dogs that are sleeping, eating, or around small puppies, and

4. Never leave small children unsupervised around dogs, even dogs you trust.
